The true inspo behind NanaBowls…

Phil and Jessica met in 2014 when they were Director and Guest Services Manager at Phuket Cleanse, Asia’s leading health and fitness retreat. They went on to work independently but decided to join forces again back in Thailand in 2016. Here’s what happened next i.e. how it all started…

One night, whilst laying on the bed, they dreamt up NanaBowls. They wanted a smoothie bowl they could have in the morning that tasted delicious, was insta-worthy, and was actually nutritionally good for them… an all-in-one smoothie bowl some would say!

You see, they’ve always liked refreshing, thick, creamy smoothie bowls, but they were fed up of the usual smoothie bowl sugar spikes, dairy content and lack of protein…

So the next morning Phil and Jess went on a “micro-mission” to create a delicious and nutritious smoothie bowl. They threw in some vegan protein, some healthy fats to prevent sugar/insulin spikes and a whole host of fresh fruit, veggies and superfoods. The result was good, and after a bit of development, later that week they had created their now infamous RoseBerry Coconut NanaBowl… And that’s when the NanaBowls brand was born.

They thought “we need to revolutionise the standard smoothie bowl and create a new smoothie bowl… the world’s most delicious and nutritious smoothie bowl, ever!”…”how cool would that be?”.

This became the NanaBowls Mission Statement!

But Phil and Jess haven’t always been smoothie bowl gurus, far from it…

Phil’s background is engineering! He gained a Masters Degree in Architectural Engineering at Bath University, went on to consult internationally for multimillion dollar projects, including the 2012 Olympic Stadium. But whilst working in Saudi Arabia, 5 years ago, Phil left the corporate world and decided to jump into the health and wellness sector. He took on the role of Director of Phuket Cleanse and that sparked his passion for all things healthy and performance enhancing. Phil is now a TEDx Speaker, Performance Coach and Award Winning Consultant.

Meanwhile, Jess gained a Bachelors Degree in Sociology at Nottingham University. After graduation, and after her time with Phuket Cleanse, Jess joined the incredible Deliciously Ella team for 2 years as the Events Manager. It was with Ella that Jess developed her passion for all things healthy… (it’s where she also honed her ability to saturate, brighten, and structure her Instagram foodie pics)! Jess now leads social media campaigns for global health brands and is the creative spark behind NanaBowls’ marketing strategy.

So there you have it… that’s how NanaBowls actually started. It was actually quite by accident! Not planned at all… Just by creating something we ourselves wanted to eat. Guess that’s how many startups start… by solving a problem that exists for you… ours was ‘not having access to a delicious and nutritious smoothie bowl’… first world problems, right?
